The Sokoto State Police Command has met with leaders of political parties and elected local government chairmen to discuss security challenges ahead of the commencement of political campaigns and the upcoming elections in the state.
The separate meetings were held at the Command’s headquarters on Wednesday and were attended by Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), senior police officers, and representatives of political parties.
The Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Shaffa, said the meetings were organised to strengthen cooperation among security agencies, politicians, and local government authorities to ensure peaceful political campaigns and elections.
During a separate meeting with political parties, the Commissioner warned politicians against making statements or engaging in activities that could further worsen the security situation in the state.
He urged political parties to conduct their campaigns peacefully, respect the laws guiding the electoral process, and avoid any action that could lead to violence or pose a threat to public safety.
Shaffa also called on political parties to cooperate with the police by providing timely information about potential threats, while ensuring that their supporters do not engage in violence, intimidation, or other activities that could disrupt the elections.
He said the police would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to create a secure environment that would allow political activities to take place, stressing that ensuring peace during elections is the responsibility of all stakeholders.
The Commissioner further called on local government chairmen to support security agencies in their respective areas, particularly by engaging with communities, gathering intelligence, and identifying individuals involved in criminal activities.
