President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the nation’s Service Chiefs and heads of intelligence agencies to strengthen coordination and enhance operational strategies in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other emerging security threats.
Speaking during a high-level security meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday, the President charged the security leadership to deliver greater efficiency and improved results across all theatres of operation. The meeting comes as part of renewed efforts by the administration to stabilise troubled regions and ensure a peaceful festive season for Nigerians.
Those in attendance included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Wahidi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke. Also present were the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi; Director-General of the NIA, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lt.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiadeye.
Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, the CDS, Gen. Oluyede, said the engagement with the President was “highly productive,” noting that Nigerians should expect a more secure environment in the coming weeks, especially as the festive period approaches.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu has nominated the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as the new Minister of Defence. The nomination, announced by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, has been formally transmitted to the Senate.
According to the President, General Musa’s vast operational experience and proven leadership make him “eminently qualified” to lead the Defence Ministry at a time Nigeria is intensifying efforts to strengthen its security architecture.
The Senate is expected to screen the nominee today.
